You must ensure that you check the Social Security Disability status of your case. The Social Security Administration receives and processes millions of applications for Social Security Disability every single year. In fact, the number of claims being filed is increasing year on year.

With the kind of numbers that the SSA deals with, it is absolutely understandable if cases take a long time to process and that documents or information may be lost while files are being transferred from department to department in the application process. Having said that it is understandable that these things can happen, it doesn’t make it any less frustrating for you if you are a disabled applicant who has been waiting forever to know the Social Security Disability status of your case.

If you have applied for Social Security Disability Benefits, then it is a very good idea to check for updates on the status of you case regularly.

Call the Right Place to Get Updates

The SSA has provided a toll free number (1-800-772-1213) as well as TTY number (1-800-325-0778). However, the information that the helpline has about your specific case may not be completely updated.

A better idea would be to contact the SSA office where you applied and ask about the Social Security Disability status of your case. If, however, you have applied for Social Security Disability through an attorney or an advocate, then you will need to follow up with your representative and not get in touch with the SSA office directly.

Checking the Social Security Disability status of your case regularly is important.

Checking Social Security Disability Status of Your Case at Each Stage of the Application Process

A good idea is to check the social security disability status of your case at each stage of the application process. This way, you are aware of any new developments and/or the need for more documents or evidentiary proof.

Stage 1 – Initial Application

You can either get in touch with the SSA office where you filed your claim or check with the Disability Examiner who is handling your claim, or check online.

Stage 2 – Request for Reconsideration

After you submit your Request for Reconsideration, you can either contact your local SSA office or your Disability Examiner to get an update on your case.

Stage 3 – Appeal Hearing

If your file has not yet been transferred to the Appeals Office yet, then you can check with either your SSA office or Disability Examiner about the status of your case. If your file has already been transferred, then you can get in touch with the Office of Hearings Operations to get an update.

Stage 4 – Appeals Council Review

To check the status of your case at this stage you can call 1-703-605-8000.

Stage 5 – Federal Courts Appeal

At this stage you can’t do anything. You attorney or lawyer will be the one to follow on your case.

Keeping abreast of the Social Security Disability state of your case can help expedite your case.
