6. Consider Alternatives

After all that research and preparation, your boss still says no to when you ask for a pay raise. So what are the next steps after that? First, you need to know why your boss said no. Reasons for the denial could actually be fair.

For example, your boss needs you to meet additional performance targets within a given period of time, say, the next six months. Therefore, create a specific plan of action, listing down exactly what you are expected to do to get that raise. Also make sure you ask for regular feedback sessions to ensure that you are on track with your goals.

If your boss says that a salary hike is out of the budget, then look for alternative forms of payment. According to the master career counsellor and career services director at BBCS Counselling, Beverly Baskin, there are other alternative methods of payment that can also be negotiated instead of just asking for a salary hike.

Some of the things you can negotiate for are

  • A work from home option,
  • Extra vacation days
  • Flexi hours
  • A better office space
  • Additional administrative help to reduce your work load
  • A one-time bonus
  • Assistance with tuitions
  • Sponsorship or reimbursement to join a professional association
  • Sponsor your attendance at conferences and training programs
  • Asking for a change in title. This is actually one of the most important things that you can negotiate. A change in title costs the company nothing. However, it is much more valuable than a small hike in your salary. In the future, if you wish to change jobs, your job title can actually set you up for a complete different pay band than the one you’re in right now. What this means is that while it may not help you in the now, a change in title can make a huge difference in the future when you change jobs.

At the end of the day, remember, the worst that can happen is that your boss can say no when you ask for a raise.
