5. Have another Offer in Hand

In today’s world, most companies don’t give pay hikes consistently. A lot of times, even if you make your case – and it’s a strong case – there is only a 50% chance of you being given a raise when you ask for it.

One thing that can really put pressure on your employer is if you have another job offer in hand. According to Brandon Smith, founder of The Workplace Therapist, companies nowadays don’t give raises unless they feel a sense of urgency.

The longer you stay with an organization, the less you are paid than someone who gets hired from outside for the same role. And it takes time for you to get a “salary compensation” or “equalization” from your organization.

Smith advises that if you’re planning to use another job offer as leverage, then ensure that it is for a similar role and/or a similar industry.

But remember, if you are going to use that job offer as a bargaining chip, be ready to use it. This means being okay with saying goodbye to your current company. There are times when the company may call your bluff and ask you to take the other job. So be prepared for that eventuality too.
